Why Are Textbooks So Expensive?
With the average new textbook costing more than $100, the typical student can expect to spend more than $900 a year on books.
What makes Textbooks so expensive?
- Lack of competition in the textbook market. Consolidation in the past few decades has reduced the number of major textbook companies to just a handful.
- The end consumers (students) do not select the product, and the product is not purchased by faculty nor professors. Price is removed from the purchasing decision which gives the publisher power to set prices high.
- High cost of starting up keeps new companies from entering the publishing business.
What are the solutions?
- Purchase of used copies of textbooks.

- Sell your textbooks back at the end of the semester.
- Online Textbook Exhanges which connect buyers and sellers.
- Student to student sales.
- Sell your used books on line at eBay, Amazon, etc.
- Rental Programs. Renting may be “the best short-term” way to lower textbook costs. Chegg.com rents textbooks to college students.
- Open textbook, a free, openly-licensed textbook offered online by its author.
- Many textbooks are now available as online electronic books.
Most leading textbook companies publish a new edition every 3 or 4 years, more frequently in math & science. If the edition you are using no longer is in use by your college or university, it may be still used in others. This will provide you an opportunity to sell yours. There are older graduates who want copies of the texts they used when in college. If you do your research, it is possible to recoup some of your investment and keep your costs down.
